Adventure! Day 13 - Easy Peasy Hike - Lake City, CO
We did not go to the lake. Or maybe we haven’t yet? We did go on the waterfall hike. Lydia drove the bus up (down? I don’t even know) a windy dirt road with some pretty big drop offs and no shoulder. I don’t think she touched the brakes very often: instead, she used 2nd and 3rd gear and on the way back home Eli and Kayleigh sat in the front seats so they could observe how the downshifting worked.
Caitlin said the hike was “easy peasy.” I think she’s involved with the fellas who determine the grades for hikes in Kentucky (or Georgia or Tennessee or wherever we were).
After the hike we went for ice cream and it was really really good ice cream. And I had a cappuccino that was also very good. Tara said she’s never sad eating ice cream - I get the sentiment, but all the other ice cream on this trip has not even been worth eating. Damien didn’t even have any or any coffee. He’s very virtuous.
Then my favorite part of the day happened, and everyone went different directions. Some people
went on an “in town” hike with Lydia, some people went home to work, and other people went strolling round the shops in town.
Damien and I got to play at the park with the little boys, and it was really fun. They have an old school merry go round and Thorin kept telling me to push it faster and faster - it was hard work! And then he wanted me to chase him, and he’s fast! And we swang in the swings (higher and higher), and climbed all over the jungle gym, and when we got hot and tired we drove the bus home and watched Trolls. I felt pretty good on the hike but I was worn out after the playground. I think that probably happens to me in Florida too, so maybe I’m adjusted to the altitude now.
Ollivander said the “in town” hike was hard and had some sections where falling was not a good option and that I would have hated it. I’m glad I didn’t go or know anything about it in advance, or I would have worried. When they got back, we went down to the river again and went swimming.
We all had dinner together (Damien grilled outside and it was very good) and sat on the porch and chatted about this and that. We learned that the road we need to take for our departure in a few days is only open certain times of day (special, but they have to maintain the roads sometime and it’s not like Florida where you can just go around). That info was illuminating. We discussed doing a big hike on Monday - Lydia and Gabe reviewed our jackets and hiking pants and found us slightly lacking but they think they can make up the difference. I’m not gonna hike the big hike (6 straight hours of hiking and 14000 feet up), but maybe I’ll stroll around town and take the little guys to the playground again.
Tomorrow we are planning on getting up early, going for coffee, then heading out to the lake. I kinda think I should pack a picnic. Then later in the evening we will go out to eat - all of us together. That should be entertaining.
Almost to the halfway point of our trip.
Oh. I almost forgot the very best part of today. Torie gave up the mullet (it was fun while it lasted and the new cut is fresh).
