Adventure! Day 26 - The Long and Winding Road

Liam is behind the wheel. It’s 12:48am; I will try to sleep at some point but right now the wind is blowing us around and I’m not gonna sleep. It’s rattling our door. It’s 27mph gusts and we are feeling them. we had to turn off the AC, so it is getting really hot in here. I’m a little confused as to why Miss America’s acting like she’s overheating - it’s only 93 degrees out right here. But the front AC quit blowing, and that has been our indication to go ahead and turn it off. The floor feels hotter than usual, though.

Reporting from the trenches: still very hot in here. It’s almost 2am and Liam is still driving, but he’s saying he’s tired. It’s 86 degrees outside and we are talking about pulling off sometime to let the bus cool down. (We would not cool down. We would swelter for 2 hours. Hard choices.) Pressing on unless the temp gauge says no. Sweating.

It cooled off and we could run the AC. Liam drove until 3 and now Tara is about to start driving. She will probably stop at 6 and then it’s my turn. Looks like we will go straight to Austin if we can.

Ok. I drove us 6:30 to 12:30. We made it to Las Cruces. Tanner is driving now. My brain was tired. I booked us a hotel 12 minutes from the tuba dude. I hope we get there about 10 so I can actually sleep tonight, but I am guessing no - with the time change headed back home, we have to plan for a later arrival.

Tanner had an adventurous drive including a stop at border patrol. When the guard asked him if everyone on the bus was a US citizen, he said “ummm….” And then looked back at everyone and said “ummm…?..yeah?” Luckily that was enough to wave Miss America through.

We switched again and I drove a long stretch. 5 hours left and Alivia is driving. We stopped at a Luvs to fuel up and we put in the 89. It was $3.44 and it felt cheap. Perspective is interesting.

I’ve been paying attention to the road signs and so far on this leg we’ve been notified to watch out for dust storms in New Mexico and road signs in Texas say-gusty winds caution.

So we are packing for a trip to our grandmother’s house and into our trunk we are gonna put:

Nevada: cows
California: bears/falling rock
Colorado: moose/elk
Florida: deer
New Mexico: dust storms
Texas: gusty winds

We’ve been driving since 7pm yesterday, so Miss America has been cruising for the last 24 hours or so. She’s doing awesome. I might try to sleep again.

Finishing day 26 on day 27. We didn’t get in until after 2 am to our hotel and then our keys didn’t work. I was very tired.

It was a very scary last few hours on the bus for me. Liam was driving and I was sleeping, but there were many sudden stops.

I texted the tuba man that I wasn’t going to be able to manage a 7:30 meet up, got in a queen bed with Olli (after some shuffling) and waited for him to fall asleep. At 3:30, I finally closed my eyes. Day 26 about did me in.
