Adventure! Day 16-Driving to Utah
We made it to the cutoff road. And then we waited in a big line of logging trucks.
Everyone got up pretty early and Tara and Damien got the bus loaded and tetris-ized. A big group went to the park to throw the frisbee with Jaden before the art festival.
The festival was in a fantastic location - right by the park, so the little Hoy boys could play on the playground with all the other kids in town. Damien and I walked together from the house. Our dryer wasn’t functioning optimally, so we made a clothesline to hang things to dry before we went to the festival. Unlike Florida, things left to dry outside actually get dry in about 5 minutes.
We have been on the road since 11:10, but not all of that was rolling since we had to wait in line at the cutoff and we stopped in Grand Junction to buy gas and get lunch. But we are making really good time. We should be to our destination by 9:30 or so. Another day on the road and we are now just really good at it. Pros. We’ve got our roadtrip playlist going and Damien is driving. He likes driving, and I like when he drives. He’s calm and quietly mesmerized by the view.
Actually it’s just really nice to have him with us. We’ve got these young men traveling with us and they are capable and energetic and kind and strong and no-one has even dreamed of bothering us, but when Damien is here I breathe a tiny bit easier - the feeling of being the person everyone looks to is less.
People are reading and gaming and looking out the window and I’m writing. This part of the world is weirdly flat, but there are mountains in the distance everywhere we look. It feels like we’ve zoomed out from our Lake City view.
Well. I just got out of a hot tub in Utah and it’s tomorrow now. We arrived in Salt Lake City before 9 and just in time to hit the Whole Foods before they closed. Emme’s house is a 3-minute drive from the grocery and we have the whole downstairs to ourselves. It was so fun to see everyone, and there was lots of energy and we formed an assembly line to bring in all our bags and sleeping mats. Tomorrow we will have brunch and celebrate Naomi before her mission trip and then maybe we will go camping. Or maybe we will just hang here and relax. Let’s find out tomorrow (well, today).
